To Celebrate Disability History Month All4Inclusion have published biographies of ‘Disability Champions’ – some living, some now passed. We have published 5-Minute interviews with disability campaigners and role model. We have also published articles about Disability History as well as some blogs on disability issues including the Assisted Suicide Bill.
Disability History Month came to a close yesterday but we shouldn’t just Celebrate Disability History during Disability History Month, we should celebrate it every month, every week and every day of the year.
As disabled people we should be proud of our history, and we should be promoting it. During Disability History Month we have undertaken 5-Minute interviews with disabled people who have invisible or hidden disabilities as well as those with visible disabilities.
Even though Disability History Month has come to an end we shall continue to conduct 5-Minute Interviews and hope to print many more during 2025. We would like to thank everyone who has kindly agreed to complete a 5-Minute interview for us. If you have any suggestions for other people that we can interview who are disability campaigners and/or role models please let us know by including your suggestions in the comments box below this article.
During Disability History Month we have published a number of articles about Disability History and we would like to publish many more – can you help us? Are you will to write an article for us whether it is about Deaf History the History of Blind People or the History of Neurodivergence and other hidden disabilities? If you can help please let us know in the comments section below this article.
We would also like to publish articles about disability art and disability artists including some 5-Minute interviews with some disabled artists. If you can help please let us know by posting in the comments section below this article.
Many of us had hoped that the election of a new Government would lead to real change for disabled people through:
The incorporation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into UK law.
Reform of Access to Work to make it available to job seekers as well as those in work along with the staffing and resources to ensure that Access to Work applications are processed within a month rather than the current waiting time of 18 months.
Strengthening of the Equality Act 2010 to make Reasonable Adjustments legally enforceable within a month rather than having to go to an Employment Tribunal which can take up to 2 years.
Introduce new employment rights for disabled people.
Providing support to disabled people seeking work including proper support from Job Centres
Sadly, none of this has happened. The new Labour Government have backtracked on their commitment to incorporate the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into UK law.
They have produced a new Employment Rights Bill that totally ignores the needs of disabled workers. At the same time they have continued the attack on disabled people and disability benefits
Disabled People will have to continue to demand their rights and make sure that our voices are loud enough so that both this new Labour Government and Society in general hears us.
